Last night I was watching TV Discovery channel Coast I watch it a lot as I find iit very interesting and it showed the River Mersey the part that I was interesting with Birkenhead ,Cammel Lairds and Port Sunlight I can remember going to Port Sunlight when I was kid I think it was with a school trip at that time there was a village were most of the people .lived who worked there .I suppose it is all changed now

Yes Lou that Discovery Channel is really good,as you say they have some really good Documentaries there.
Mixed that one though,will keep an eye out in case it comes on again.

Last night-- it is all changed now

Port Sunlight, was built, for the workers, at their soap factory, I think is still there, every house is different, and of course a lovely pub

Yes Jim it is the same one .As regards to Cammel Lairds during the war it suffered very little damage through the bombing but a lot of the houses around got damaged .Two of my aunties got bombed out we had a incendiary bomb landed in our back yard but very little damage was done .Those were the days when one was proud to be British

Unless you have been Bombed it is difficult to imagine it.
Our House was bombed and did ten bobs worth of damage. but mother was blown up.

we seem to forget all the hardships are parents had that's why we should pass the history on to our young? bombs are being dropped every day in other lands and we should be grateful to our troops for keeping us safe by land sea and air.jp

Port Sunlight was built by, I believe, Lever Bros. for their workers good accommodation and now is a very sought after location to live in.
There are a number of instances where Victorian owners built good housing for their workers such as Port Sunlight and the Leverhulme estate in Manchester. They were the fore runners of the garden cities.

#7... Agree with those sentiments John. Although our generation can see what we or some of us see as huge mistakes by the after the war political parties who have not made the necessary decisions to protect the country. The whittling down of the defense forces whilst giving away the so called savings to other countries to build up theirs ,is only one open and glaring mistake. There are many other debateable ones, the biggest and one closest to us was the dismantling piece by piece of the British Shipping Industry, together of course with other industries. The biggest bloomer I myself can see with no excuse whatsoever to mitigate it was going into Europe under false pretences as the government then in power did. The Brish Commonwealth did and still does command a huge amount of the commodities required in the world today. This alone with the associated trade via shipping would have kept the industry going indefinetly, forget the poor excuse of Trade Unions being the downfall of. It was purely a political move on a previous arranged agenda,. The UK as regards defense will soon be totally relying on the European powers, and will be unable to make any decisions on their own. This is all due to the likes of Ted Heath ( the fiddle player) and other visionaries like him. They never were and never can in my eyes be considered patriots of the UK. Cheers John S.

john I think a lot of countries hid behind the bomb after the war the threat of having one I am not sure it was a good thing but they are with us now? with all that's going on around us in the world it only takes one nutter like this clown in Korea you don't give a kid toys like that?jp
