During the school summer vacation of 1977, I packed-up and cast off from Brooklyn on a 40-day trip -- but on a freighter. It was the Santa Lucia of the Prudential-Grace Lines and the 9,000-ton ship carried up to 12 passengers.

Quite an itinerary (determined by cargo first and foremost, of course) -- Brooklyn, Camden, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Morehead City, Charleston, Santo Domingo, Curacao, Aruba, Cartagena, Santa Marta, the Panama Canal, Cristobal, Buenaventura, Guayaquil & Callao -- then home almost direct back to Brooklyn.

After our trip, the Santa Lucia sailed on for a few more years, but then went quietly to the US Government's "mothball fleet".

Her days ended by 2005 however -- the nearly 40-yr-old ship went to the breakers. Recently, I found this photo of the Santa Lucia about to be demolished at Brownsville Texas. The date: December 2005.
