: Bound for montreal

We are in the mighty St Lawrence River today, making our way to Quebec City & then Montreal. It stirs memories & recall of the liners that once regularly plied plied these waters: Canadian Pacific, Cunard, Home Lines, Holland America, Polish Ocean, Greek Line, Europe Canada Line & others. I stood on the deck just before breakfast & could almost see one of those majestic CP liners, a white hull & with checkered funnel colors, say the Empress of France, or a Cunarder such as the Saxonia with her domed funnel & numerous booms lifted in preparation for landing. Or maybe the Arkadia outbound, with her unusual bipod mast-funnel but colorful Greek Line colors on her main funnel -- her "real" funnel.

I sailed to Canada on the then newish Empress of England in 1965, I have photo of her going under a bridge on the St. Lawrence river, also of her at the Liverpool Landing stage from where we left from on the day we sailed

The EMPRESS OF SCOTLAND was the first liner to go to Montreal under the Jacque Cartier Bridge, they had to cut several feet off the top of the mast, [ obviously not from the middle or bottom,]
George Brittan , the Bosun , had to climb to the top of the fore mast to see what the clearance would be as they sailed under it for the first time, , I think it was four or five feet.

Reminds me of one ship I was on.
The bosun told one of the deckies to paint the funnel. He answered. What colour. lol

Did more trips to Montreal than I care to remember.
Did an eight month trip on the Sarah Bowater out of Cournerbrook.
Ever trip down the coast we stopped in Montreal.
Also three trips on Beaver boats, and two on the Manchester Liners.
It was never a port that I enjoyed a run ashore.
Also full of Frenchies.
