P&O's Strathmore (1935) & her near sister Stratheden (1937) were fine looking ships, both of which gave long and popular service on the UK-Australia run.
But by 1964, they were aged and outmoded, and sold to Greek billionaire John S Latsis. With strong ties to Saudi Arabia, he used the two 23,000-ton ships in ****** pilgrim services -- to and from Jeddah from North & West Africa and from the Middle East.
The Strathmore became the Marianna Latsi and the Stratheden to Henrietta Latsi. But within two years, by 1966, the two liners rather oddly swapped names: the Marianna Latsi changed to Henrietta Latsi and the Henrietta to Marianna.
The ships' days were numbered however -- both went to Italian scrappers in 1969.
