    Default Eating Places

We have all in our time had some fabolous (and many not so fabulous) meals in many places around the world, Some have been partaken in historic buildings, some in very scenic places and some consisted of rather dubious food.
One that sticks in my mind happened on Vancouver Island.
We were loading timber in Port Alberni and there being no weekend work a bunch of us and our girl friends went off to Tofino beach for the day for some R and R. At that time it was a bit of a hippy commune and also there were a number of American draft dodgers living there.
Anyway after a spell on the beach with drinkies we followed a sign that indicated that Alaskan baked crabs could be brought at a very reasonable price. Following the signs through the woods we came across a clearing and in it was a hut where the fabulous smell of baking crabs was coming from. Only problem was the place was surrounded by the most viscous gang of hells angels I have ever come across all covered in tatoos and sitting on their Harleys practising there knife throwing talents and bike chain attacks.
Nervously entering the hut after passing through them and enduring some rather nasty stares and comments, imagine our suprise to find that the business was run by two little old ladies who spoke perfect Oxford English. We got talking to them whilst they were baking our orders and they told us that they had emigrated to Canada many years previously but they still retained their "Englishness" even down to afternoon teas etc. "One must be civilised" being their quote. When we asked them about the Hells Angels outside they declared that they were "our boys" and insisted they introduce us to them which they duly did. Once they found out we were sailors their attitude changed and we got on with them like a house on fire and I can still remember one of these little old dears scolding this huge hairy arsed biker for using bad language in front of her and he apologising!!!!
We eventually collected our freshly baked crabs and made our way back to the beach. I can honestly say I have never tasted better crab meat since. That and a cold beer, fabolous beach, warm weather and warm girls, what more could a fellow want.
Anyone else recall outstanding meals in far flung places?

Alaways enjoyed Ma the Greeks in Montreal after a night of ale in the House of Scouse.
Made the best steaks and burgers in Canada washed down with a quart of milk.

The best meal I can remember having was a magnificent steak meal at the Taverno Gaucho in Porto Alegre, Brazil. It was eat as much as you wanted. Steaks presented on swords on a stand on your table, T Bone steaks on huge platters with fries and salad, wow, all washed down with either beer, wine, or cuba libres, just wish I could go there again and sample it all. Well I can dream cant I.

Anyone remember the old Piecod Van that stood at Durban Station and sold all those lovely Bunny Chow's the Bean Bunny was my all time favourite, which when cosumed left one all covered in Yummy Curried drippings hahah! You had to have a knack to eat those !
Those B/Chows with that lovely rich Red sauce, and the Hot Chillies too! Now that was something! Yummy!!

For those who may not know what this is all about!

A Bunny Chow is a Half Loaf of Fresh Bread, with the centre firstly taken out, then filled with ones favourite Curry (Lamb,Beef,Beans etc) the the soft part taken out reinserted on the top!
    Boy was that a treat!

    HI Chris,
YES S.America was the place for steaks. MY memory was a bit further south in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the early fifties and the bar/restaraunt was one well known to seafarers at that time called Papa Fritas so easy to remember. I couldnt believe the size and taste of the Huge steak which overlapped the huge platter it was served on,by the side a huge bowl of french fries real crispy & delicious and a big jug of cold beer. Took ages to eat but a truly memorable meal remembered all these sixty years on. I recall at the time thinking the ammount & weight of that one steak would have equalled about two months meat ration for on
e person during the wartime rationing which was still in exsistence at that time
