Union Castle
Just watched the BBC TV program "The Porthole Murder" About the disappearance of Gay Gibson on the Durban Castle in 1947. Deck Steward James Camb was accused of her murder by pushing her through a porthole. Full story can be seen on google with photos.
My question is, " did stewards wear peaked caps as part of the uniform " There is a photo of James Camb wearing one.

Trader
As far as I know there were never Peak Caps worm by Stewards on any Castle Ship at my time anyway, all we had was the normal White Stewards Uniforms ,Fitst Class had little Bunny Jackets (a sort of Lavender ) with Shirt and Bowtie Tourist had buttoned up to the Neck Whites.
But there could at some stage have been another outfit??
Cheers
As I could not watch that here just for others too

Re: Union Castle
If you look at the Picture of the one with all the Catering staff a bit down the page you will see the different Uniforms we wore in 1st class and Tourist! The Bunny jackets were all White with Lavender down the front ! About the Tenth Pic.

Re: Union Castle
The only persons on UCL to wear any form of cap, formal or otherwise were officers.
Included in that would be the Purser and his second along with Chief steward and second.
Though in all my 3 years with UCL never saw either in a cap .
Deck hands chipping may have worn some form of head protection but that is about all.

In my day it was usually a piece of cloth from the rag bag tied pirate style, today it will be helmet, goggles, ear muffs, protective suit, steel capped boots, thick gloves, cod piece perhaps!

Trader I notice you give his rating as Deck Steward well as a matter of interest the Deck Stewards wore a cap in CPR.I wonder was it part of the uniform for D/S in many companies.

#6... After all Ivan’s armaments against the elements and dirt a burlap sack with the corners open ended to take the arms. This to keep the protective suit clean and to avoid any damage to same. Money doesn’t grow on trees you know. The shipowner is thinking of your welfare , you must think of his. And save any money so he can afford to employ you. So happy to be retired..... JWS
