Tracing a record of a Chinese Merchant Seaman - can you help?
Hello and thank you for accepting my registration.
I have an enquiry that I hope one of the members may be able to help with. I am trying to trace any record of a Chinese Merchant Seaman who was born in Shanghai in 1924 and who I understand served with the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. His name was Samuel Yung Sung DONG and it is believed his address while onshore was 17, Wesley Street, Liverpool. He married an English girl Claudina REGINIO from Liverpool and they subsequently had a daughter Christina
Like many Chinese Merchant Seamen it appears Samuel was repatriated in late 1945 or early 1946 and not heard from again. Little Christina was adopted by her aunt. Due to the fact China was in the throes of it's own civil war during the period Samuel was repatriated, it is uncertain where he would have disembarked. It may have been Singapore or Hong Kong.
I've tried without success to find any records for Samuel at the National Archives 1929-1945. I am aware through other websites that Samuel may have been one of the 20,000 Chinese Seamen who were recruited to assist the war effort. I understand a company called John Swire & Sons, who were also known as Butterfield and Swire were agents for Alfred Holt and Company (Blue Funnel) who employed many of the Chinese Merchantmen. I also understand (and please excuse my ignorance of this vital part of our history), that many of the Chinese Merchant Seaman were also employed by Anglo-Saxon Petroleum (Shell). What I'm really hoping to find is either a record of service, Seaman's Book or any Discharge papers or cards.
Could anyone point me to where I may find them? I'm sorry I do not have any records of the ships Samuel sailed in.
Thank you in advance
Malcolm Kyle

Thank you for your prompt responses.
I do have the record of the marriage and birth certificate for Claudina Reginio and Samuel in March 1943.
It is any reference to his service I'm looking for.
Thank you again and warm regards,
Malcolm

The records added above are more about getting the name correctly at this stage,
apart from your initial post, there are two other name formulations. Any record search
requires actual. Will look further ASAP. Can you confirm any as correct ?
K.
