they were 6 month articles, but three month voyages so could pay off after three weeks.,

In Cunard and Canadian Pacific Empress s on the North Atlantic run, we signed Running Agreement Articles. and got it in the book.....RA.
They were for 6 months but only 3 weeks or so voyages, so you could pay off after 3 weeks or stay on for the six months

Lets not forget lads while you where on H.T. Articles you could hand the skipper your 36 hour notice or was it 72 hours, to pay off if you wanted at the next U.K. Port of call, If my memory serves me it was 3 days notice on F.G.V. But then if you where half way through the Suez canal outward bound what was the point. As we all know you would after a long voyage F.G. might or might not get asked back to rejoin your ship. Your 15 Terry, with regard to notice given for FGN ships, i am sure that i always signed 2 year article, with a sub clause that if the ship returned to a port between Kiel canal and Brest, you could pay off after 6 months, maybe i am wrong, it was a long time ago. The reason i believe that is on my last trip we went up chanel through the Kiel and into Rostock, then back to Hamburg, where re quested articles be broken and we pay off, this was after 5 months and 15 days, initially the skipper refuse, but eventually relented, kt

You are right in the main Keith, it was 24 month Articles but could sign off between Elbe and Brest, if the company agreed, unless the ship was going into drydock within those limits then the company had to sign you off, unless you were company servants, also you could not pay off in those limits if the vessel was scheduled to return to UK after a final discharge port in those limits, which in our days could be anything from a week to three weeks discharging. Also if you were in foreign limits (outside Elbe to Brest) and your 24 months expired, the owners did not have to repatriate you if the vessel was scheduled to return to the UK in the next 3 months after the 24 months. However you could in those circumstances pay for your replacement to fly out and fly home at your own expense, which was always a non starter, an air fare from Japan in those days would have taken a years salary. Happy days, as never had to take the decision, my longest stint was 22 months
