How can I find a Merchant Navy Discharge Book Number?
Hi all,
Excuse my ignorance but I am very new to this!
I work with retired merchant seamen and I am looking to find out two gentlemen's discharge book numbers. Is there an accessible online list where I can find their details please (I have their names, dates of birth and places of birth etc). They both served in the navy in the 1960's and 1970's.
I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction please.
Thank you

Re: How can I find a Merchant Navy Discharge Book Number?
I have no doubt that can be done. there are a few people on site will know where to look . However do the two names you seek are they willing to have their names revealed publicly or would they rather keep off too public places , in whch case it may be better if anyone takes on may ask you if you want the information kept more private via the sites private line. No doubt others will answer your query. Regards JS

Hi Julie, Welcome to the site and well done you in helping retired MN seamen.
Will send you a private message with my email address if privacy is preferred or you can post their details here if they don't mind.
All we require is full name, place and dob.
If they recall any of their ships they may even find some ex crew members here.

Thank you for replying. Both gentlemen would prefer that their details are not shared publicly. Thank you for pointing that out.

May I humbly suggest one of our experts delete the NHI number as soon as possible as this could be used for non legal purposes by others, as we are open to the general public

Good Morning Robert, Have been advised by Hugh previously that there are no records available from the Registry of Shipping and Seamen. After 1972, the Registrar General was no longer required by legislation to keep records of individual seafarers. Therefore, it may be very difficult to obtain. Hopefully Hugh can possibly enlighten further.

Re: How can I find a Merchant Navy Discharge Book Number?
Hi Robert, From Hugh on a previous inquiry:
'There are crew lists for the years 1951-1976 and are held at the Maritime History Archive in Newfoundland but have not been indexed. So you would have to ask them to search their site. They are also held off site and and may take a while to get hold of - that is if they still have them'.
You would need to ask for your ships by name including their numbers for the year or part that you served. See link below.
Pendennis Castle No IMO number: 5273808
Hope this helps. Marian

Re: How can I find a Merchant Navy Discharge Book Number?
With time differences seems i miss out at times with some of these Questions, but as i see that Marian, (via Hugh) and herself have managed to come up with the goods , it is therefore best left at that, and i will refrain from getting involved! Ah!!! a bit of well deserved Rest! LOL
Now with the difinite handing in of my dear Wifes Resignation in July, (At last she is going on full retirement) i will be now actually be refraining from any futher researching anyway, as i feel that i have done my bit over the Years i have been on site!
So will happily just leave it all alone now, and leave it in the capable hands of Hugh , and also Marian, there may also be something else in the Pipeline but will have to think on it! No more said!
Thank You
Cheers
