Query from a cadet
Good afternoon, I am a first year cadet about to go to on my first sea phase in a month or so hopefully, i am with a company called lomar shipping. I was simply wondering if anyone has had any dealings with this company before as i only know 2 other cadets with my same company. I am hired through clyde marine, and I am also hoping to get some affirmation on the current state of cadets being hired by their sponsering company after their cadetship, as i hear mixed things. i am a deck cadet, and am working on chemical and bulk carriers, and i am really hoping to make this my career, so any information on the likes would be greatly appretiated! Thank you for your time!

Re: Query from a cadet
My advice would be join your first ship, obey your superiors, learn from them, but keep an open mind on everything. A ship's well being depends upon 'every' crew member playing their part regardless of rank or rating and at times your life will depend upon your own and others actions, a crew is a team and each member of that team expects the other members to do their best, you may not like a team mate, but he/she is as important to that team and your wellbeing as you think you are.
All shipping companies have mixed reputations, some bad, some good, never join a ship with pre-notions that it is a bad ship, it may be old and scruffy but can be a happy ship, it can be like a shiny new pin but maybe not so happy, that's life, one man's meat is another's poison.
Keep an open mind on everything, you may not like an order, but obey it, you are not privy to the bigger picture that initiates the order.
Good luck in your career and enjoy it, any life has ups and downs, weather the downs which will enable you to enjoy the norm.

Adam
Lomar have their own website. A quick look shows that they have a varied and reasonably new fleet of bulk carriers, container vessels and tankers, both oil and chemical.
They place importance on crew training with up to 50 cadets taken yearly so on the face of it they appear to be a good long term prospect.
The only additional I can add is that you will be working with personnel from a number of different countries so bare this in mind, respect there traditions and use it to broaden your experience of different cultures and language.

Re: Query from a cadet
Looking at shipping today when it comes to bulk carriers, containers and the like the number of crew is very low.
Legal requirements for basic numbers are not always adhered to by some foreign companies.
Just hope this company is as good as it sounds.
But what ever it will be a life building experience.

Happy daze John in Oz.
