SHIPS NAME AND SERVICE RECORD Full Name David Edes Discharge Book Number R901438 Department Deck Your Rank/Rating AB Which Ships were you on and When Stena Seaspread 1979 Stena Inspector 1982 Notes: -
Hi David, you were on here sometime ago as remember discussing the Stena Seaspread and the Inspector which I believe was chartered by the MOD to recover certain equipment from a sunken RN vessel after the Falklands war. As the oldest commissioned ship was HMS Reclaim at the time and would in all probability have been unable to do the job, and we were the standby for such and could not be committed to the task. I wondered if any of the ex Seaforth Clansmans crew ever followed up on your previous story. To show what a small world we live in, just got talking the other day to a more or less neighbour, he was ex RN and did his 22 years for his pension. He transferred to the Australian Navy who he still works for. His wife as well is ex RN and she believe it or not worked for HMS Vernon. All this during the time of the Falklands war, so have come half way round the world to meet people unbeknown to me were associates workwise all those years ago. Regards JS PS was informed by same person that HMS Vernon ( a Shore Establisment) was disbanded a number of years ago and now comes under another name. The same person talking to now has 38 years service between the two navies RN and Australian and expects to go another 5 years before anchoring. Cheers JS PPS For any ex RN personel who may have known the person, he was an ex boy seaman, and has been out here about 8 years, he was down in the Falklands and his name is Neil Harris, believe he is now an Instructor in one of the Naval Sciences which is a mystery to me. Good memory there JS However I cannot recall any such Lady working for my Hire Maid Services (Vernon) LOL
HMS Vernon, not HMP. Although being locked into a Diving Bell isn't much different. Remember David Edes post as was also the name of the Owner of the British Magnus, however on enquiry some time ago was a different person, however think David knew of him. The British Magnus was part one time of BUE ( British Underwater Engineering). And believe finished up here in Garden Island Fremantle Naval Base as a submarine Tender. Cheers John S.
Haven't had any luck so far in finding a crew list , but found a photo, will try and upload image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg - - - Updated - - - David Ede , was Skipper on Seaspread and Inspector , then went on to own BUE I believe I'm David Edes , only made it as far as AB
David that was said to me years ago in the reverse as one said quite truly what we want are ABs not BAs. Everyone is important on a ship, a ship wouldn't be a ship without ABs. Cheers JS
David re almost your namesake, he was a big lad and well overweight. I put the phone down after resigning from one company and redialled a number, told him the score and he took me on straight away. Told me to go down to wallsend and tell the master I was going supernumerary and if he wanted more information just say I was one of the superintendants. I don't know what the office politics were at the time but believe there was the usual assassinations going on. He was to my knowledge one of the Directors of BUE and the British Magnus was his cut of the deal on their disintegration. The company he then formed was Veesea Shipping, after being chucked off the Magnus I went down to Sunderland to see the first arrival of the American ships and the conversion of same to North Sea stand by vessels, this was after the Piper "A". The ship was renamed the Veesea Topaz. and I took her out until I left the UK just about. The only latter ship I took away just prior to catching the big aeroplane to Australia was the Chieftan which laid up in Lowestoft and was an ex RN salvage vessel, the skipper that was there passed on the pilot ladder, he couldn't wait to get off, he was ex Green Peace and think it may have had something to do with the fishing industry and complaints about disturbing the environment. This ship was owned by Briggs Marine/Aberdeen, and received enough in a week to pay all removal costs to Australia. Anyway as said David Ede was a big lad and would have been a good candidate for a heart attack in those days, would like to think he was still alive as was a generous man and a straight shooter what I remember, his background apart from what said and apart from having an extra masters cert. I wouldn't know. Reference going down to Wallsend, the skipper I did the joining trip with turned out to be an ex Runciman apprentice of the same era as myself so I told no lies and gave him the true story. I would imagine it was the usual office cliques having their own disciples and followers, Cheers JS
Addittional to above just remembered was finally called Vector Offshore and still is today. Anyone new considering a job in that side of the Industry would suggest they apply there. He was one of the few owners of many in that side of the Industry who had the correct visions of the type of vessels needed. and went ahead and did so. Hope all went well for himself and the company. Cheers JS
