Hi
Sailed as an Engineer on Loch Long - Loch Maree - Loch Lomond - Sig Ragne - Nordic Clansman - Nordic Commander
I remember Jimmy Ryan from Leverburgh - was a Steward on the Loch Long when I joined in 1976 - he made up my cabin - believe he lives in Inverness now
Does anyone remember Hughie Newton the 'Fridgie....

Loch Maree
Hughie,
I was on the Loch Maree for four years, Reefers were a big guy from the Islands and a wee guy from Ireland who later left, Bill Harvey was captain most of the time and John Deacon was one of the chief Engineers.
As one person mentioned before Denholms was a great company and great crews all round, being a Janner I was in most cases the odd man out on most ships I sailed on.
Also on the Dalama, Cast Heron, Nordic Clansman.
I was a Chief Steward later known as a Catering officer, not that it made any differnce, I started my time at sea as Catering boy and worked my way up through all the jobs in the catering department.

G/Day John
Thanks for the welcome, I see you are living in Oz , are you originally from the old country ?
In my younger days I had some good trips around the coast, on BP Tankers, my first visit was on the British Industry 32,000 crude oil from Mina to Kwinana, followed by a second trip. Kwinana only had a small wooden jetty for the refinery, nothing else there, used to walk for about 1 mile to the crossroads to catch a bus to Freemantle or drink in the Pub, In think it was called the Naval Base!
Done all the small ports fell in love in Townsville and jumped ship, those were the days where if you found a job, kept yourself clear of the police, save some money you could apply for Australian citizenship. Unforutnately I got cold feet and was sent back to the ship I jumped, British Hazel, she was still on the coast.
Had lots of good times on the British Gunner, British Loyalty. I have even been to a place that most Aussies dont know exists, Wyndam in the Northern territories, Population in 1973 was about 500, it was a Sunday and the Pub was closed, but they opened for us! what a great three days.
Yeah right enough I should put some dates on the ships, I can remember faces but am the worlds worst for remembering names.
Keep in touch,
Rgds
Old Janner.
