Ryan's Daughter is a 1970 film directed by David Lean. The film, set in 1916, tells the story of a married Irish woman who has an affair with a ...British Officer during World War I, despite opposition from her nationalist neighbours. The film is a very loose adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary.

Re: [Film!]"Ryan's Daughter"
Marian, visually I think this is a good trailer for the film, even if they could have had a more convincing voice-over to attract the punters (probably made for the U.S.market). This film left a great impression upon me at the time of it's release. Superb acting performances all round, great cinematography and of course the sure hand of David Lean at the helm. Watched it again not so long ago and still enjoyed it immensely just as I had more than 40 years ago. As I'm sure you know, John Mills won the 'Best Supporting Actor's Oscar' for his portrayal of Michael, the simpleton.

That in my humble opinion was one of the very best roles Mills was ever in. Along with Alec Guiness possibly two of the best character actors of their time.

Happy daze John in Oz.
