Remember the "British Hotel " Lyttelton

Remember the old "British Hotel" in Lyttelton New Zealand , well it will soon be no more as it was shaken to the core in our 22nd Feb Earthquake and has to come down for safty reasons . The old time ball station one of only six in the world that stills works they are going to try and save it ,big task. Lyttelton had six pubs on the bottom street and two on the top street , sadly all are closed due to structural damage . It will never be the same again ,hang on to your memories .

hi kiwi. i remember lytllton vaughly. but not the names of pubs. i think i went swimming in the harbour and the beach. i remeber one of the girls was hevily pregnant and kept diving in a pool for a big splash and laugh. i also think that was where i walked through a railway tunnel from chrischurch after missing the last bus.thanks for another memory. alf

Hello Michael, thanks for the pictures, very sad to see the devestation in Christchurch and the area, I hope you all get back on an even keel as soon as possible. I haven't been to Christchurch for nearly fourty years but I have many fond memories of the very friendly people. As for the British hotel I don't think any pommie sailor would pass by its doors without going in for a cold one and I wasn't going to break with tradition.

yes i have had some good drinking times in that pub way back in 1947 when i was on the saminver it was not the happy place for some of our guys got fined for fighting and one of the deck boys was drowned when he was coming back to the ship in a taxi with one other guy the taxi driver also was drowned the young guy is buried in the local cemetery

I had lots of good times in the British Hotel, many many good memories of a truly Seafarers Pub, I lived in Lyttleton for a while when I left the British Merchant Navy and served on the Kiwi Coast, did the overnight run on the Wahine , which later sank, and sailed on quite a few rust buckets along the way, Worked later on the Wellington Pilot Launch the Tiakina as well.
You just had to walk in the Btitish in Lyttleton and you either know someone or get the latest info on any of the ships. Called in Lyttleton on the Durham, Turakina Port Jackson Port Pirie, Londoner, andd heaps of Coasters. my very best for memories that will never be erased. Glenn Baker

Hi Glenn again. I cannot remember the name of the Hotel that we used to drink in at Melbourne, it was in the main drag, most of the drinking holes in different ports I cannot forget, but the one in Melbourne???

Hello Terry, The hotels on the main street Auckland where the Cream Of Society drank were (the Snake Pit} The Great Northern. away from there was the Most famous (Ma Gleasons) where one could drink in a saw dust atmosphere with some very exotic Princesses. some with an exellent command of the English Language of which i never knew until I was taken there as an ordinary Seaman by some AB,s that noted I needed to learn about some culture in Ma Gleesons hotel.
Sometimes an Empty jug was known to come flying past ones ear while embibing in this sophisticated Hotel . Glenn

Thanks for the pictures, its so sad, I remember going into The British with my late husband who was third Engineer when we were on the OCL Bay Boats in 1977-1981. Those memories of such great times will always stay with me.

Hi, I had many good nights in the British whilst on the Bay Boats in the 80's, a real shame its gone, happy days.
