Shipmates.........the M.N. Memorial fiasco refers.
Can I take it that we on this site have adopted the view that whilst it is perfectly acceptable to upbraid a private enterprise or Local Government for apparent inappropriate practice, we should baulk when it comes to a respected corporation such as Trinity House. If, as now appears to be the case, Trinity House have a case to answer then surely they should be held to account, regardless.
As John (Happy Daze) rightly points out, we may well be wasting our time, but if, after sending a polite yet pertinent letter we receive little or no response from Trinity House, then it will only serve to confirm what some of us are now beginning to believe. 'To quietly fold our tents and creep off into the night' - is that the way of the merchant seaman?, I never thought so. I honestly thought we were made of sterner stuff. Don't we owe it to those brave souls whose names are enshrined on the memorial at Tower Hill ? We can at least try.
Surely, I'm not the only one who feels this way ?

Make your blood boil
Roger
You can be sure that you are not the only one that feels the way you do, see my earlier post where-in the mayor has confirmed that it was Trinity House who mooted the idea of holding events in the Trinity Square gardens.
I am quite happy to take up the cudgeol and send a copy of the email to the Elder Brethren together with a letter asking for an explanation , but do not feel it incumbent upon me without the support or blessing of others, as Chris and Brian were nominated for the proposal. Chris has pointed out that he does feel that having had no direct information it may not be politic for him to undertake the task, and I think that is understandable. There are others with a more literary bent and more qualified than I to undertake the task, but if no one wants the task then I throw my hat into the ring. Any letter written would be polite and to the point enquiring why such a venture was even considered.

Roger
you are absolutely right about this situation. We have all used up a lot of anger on this subject, and I don't think we should drop it there, for the sake of a letter to the right place. It needs to be written by someone with a literary bent.

Statement on Trinity Square Gardens
Commenting on the Trinity Square Gardens proposals, Mayor Lutfur Rahman said, "Staging events in the Gardens was an idea put forward by Trinity House who have been working with the Council and the proposed event organisers - so I am surprised by comments made this weekend. The Council do not wish to cause any offence to any of the parties involved. As it no longer has the support of Trinity House and the maritime community I have put a stop this event."
Ward Councillor for Whitechapel and Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Shahed Ali, added, "These gardens are an important part of the borough's heritage and I am extremely glad the Mayor has used his executive powers to stop this event taking place."
October 10, 2011
The "Staging events in the Gardens was an idea put forward by Trinity House who have been working with the Council and the proposed event organisers" is enough to expect some form of public response from Trinity House.
I would dearly love one person to ask for more clarification from Trinity House.
Ivan has my vote if all leans in his direction.
I have been away, but have kept up to spec on the lap top and have been involved via several bodies, catching up further, you chaps have done well.
We still need to get to the bottom of all and need answers.

I certainly support Ivan and thank him for volunteering. I made my feelings known and was certainly " not folding my tent up and creeping away into the night ".
I just feel that there are other people more qualified to write. People who have been in direct contact with Tower Hamlets Council and can quote personal communications from the likes of the Mayor and the Licensing Officer wherein the allegations about Trinity House were made.

Nautilus
MEMORIAL PARTY PLAN ‘STOPPED:
Nautilus has welcomed the news that the Mayor of the London borough of Tower Hamlets has vetoed plans to hold a series of day-long commercial Christmas parties in the Trinity Square memorial gardens besides the UK’s Merchant Navy war memorial.
The Union had made formal objections to the application by the event-organising firm Moving Venue to stage a series of parties at the site, with alcohol sold from 11 am until midnight.
But the council, which owns the gardens, said it had been ‘surprised’ by the reaction to the plan. In a statement issued today, Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: ‘The Council do not wish to cause any offence to any of the parties involved. As it no longer has the support of Trinity House and the maritime community I have put a stop this event.’
Nautilus general secretary Mark Dickinson welcomed the announcement. ‘We believe the concept of parties taking place at this venue is not only an insult to those the memorial honours, but also to their families and descendants,’ he added. ‘The Mayor’s statement is a welcome recognition of the outcry this ill-conceived plan generated and members should be congratulated for making their views known so quickly and effectively. We hope this will ensure appropriate respect for this site is maintained and that the Merchant Navy memorial is respected in the same way as any other public site to honour the war dead.’

Ivan and Shipmates,
Please accept my apologies if my post #112 appeared a bit 'over the top'. After reviewing my comment in the 'sober' light of day I can understand if some were offended by my remarks, but I assure you that I meant no disrespect to you or any other member of this site. Like all who have kept abreast of this unfortunate business, I am mindful of the great effort made by you, Chris Allman and so many other fellow members to express your concern and disgust and for that I applaud you all.
Statements from Moving Venues Catering and Latfur Rahman, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, both indicate that Trinity House were the instigators of this shameful proposal in the first instance. My overriding concern is to ensure that this matter not be laid to rest before Trinity House are given ample opportunity to refute any suggestion of complicity and, dare I say it, duplicity. If we are going to point the finger of suspicion we must offer them right of reply. As we are aware, for centuries, Trinity House have been foremost concerning the welfare and safety of seafarers, particularly those navigating the often treacherous coastal regions of Britain. Deservedly, they are an important part of British maritime history. With that in mind it is not easy for us to confront them with our concerns, but if that is what it takes to obtain a straight and honest answer, then so be it.
Ivan, you have indicated a willingness to write to the Elder Brethren of Trinity House on our behalf and I, for one, welcome your your kind offer. In the circumstances I can think of no other member better suited for the task. Before proceeding, may I suggest that, as a matter of common courtesy, we seek the approval of Brian (Probetts) and, perhaps, allow a day or so for any members to voice their objections to this proposal should they wish to do so.
...........................best regards to all, Roger.

Why does it not surprise me you would get a reply from Nigel forage UKIP. If you remember a few years ago a motion was tabled in the European Parliament to alter the Red Duster to be replaced by the Euro flag for all E.U. Merchant ships UK included/ Again the power of people had that one dropped in the bin were it belonged/ You will almost certainly always get a reply from him he is a very god ambassador for the UK's position in the EU And will always take your views on board i wish there were a few more like him Regards George Terry.
