No cappy - just no respect for them, all mouth and uniform. I have great respect for British MN Officers, Sailors and their skills, past and present.

Chris, I remember being aboard the Windsor Castle, I think we were in Cape Town all our crew got an invite to a xmas disco ashore it could have been xmas night, We all went along only to find the place full of Matelots who were also invited. What can I say other than recipie for disaster. As you say they thought they were the bee's knees and all gods gift to woman. Yes Merchant Seaman roughed it more than they did and we let them know it by the end of the night quite a few of them went back to there ship not only with treble barrel names but 3 noses to go with it. Terry.

I was at anchor in the Firth of Forth on a tanker, I was on watch in the wheelhouse, I saw a RN Minesweeper on my starboard beam, leaving Rosyth, it was heading directly at me, I watched and watched thinking he was going to alter and pass ahead of my position.
I got a call on VHF "YOU THERE, TANKER, DONT YOU KNOW YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO ALTER COURSE AND GET OUT OF MY WAY, THE RULES YOU KNOW."
I called back and said , "On my foremast is an anchor ball six feet in diameter, The RULES , YOU KNOW, FOR A VESSEL AT ANCHOR.
"I just heard the words "Oh Shet!, the mine sweeper went hard a starboard and another coat of paint would have collided with me.
I looked into his wheelhouse with the bins and there was about a dozen men in there.
I called up the Queens Harbour Master and reported the incident,
He replied that he had seen it and heard it on the radio and that he would be "interviewing" the Captain when he returned.

Remember when the wavy navy used have their weekend jolly's in their local Ton Class minesweepers. A good time to stay well clear of them. Heard of a few trying to shift the sides of the locks and docks to no avail. The Tons I am told were pretty hardy and resilient and apparently needed to be.
