Was gratified John to see your Posting today
As only yesterday at our Vindi, & South -east Qld . Merchant -Mariners. Meeting ,held at the Anzac Room, of Twin Towns .R.S.L. Tweed heads Discussion came up re. participation details, for this Years important 100th anniversary.
Sadly over the years, .The once Highly revered figure . Simpson, hardly gets a mention at these ceremonies ,these days.
In fact i was ,forced to remind ,the assembly, including the Padre, that there were British ,involved in the Landings. .And that .not many years prior. the citizens of Australia except for the aborigines were British Citizens.
i think what inspired me to comment is ,i can never forget that anti-british film, Directed by Peter Weir. The Anzacs.Where in the Main Scene. This runner returns ,to the Anzac Section, Amidst all the Dying and wounded .Blurts out "and the British are over there ,Sitting .drinkng tea." You can imagine the horrified reaction ,throughout the cinema,by the enraged audience.
I went to work that night ,and on my Shift was a very welll read Chappie, from Tyneside.Told him of the event,.His, reply. Wnat B.S. ,There were five V.C's awarded to the British ,that first morning"

Not sure if you have seen the latest version on TV, watched the first half hour and turned off. Having read Gallipoli by Les Carlyon the most accurate account of it all I soon realized that this version is so far from the truth to be laughable.

Evan, have been watching the terrible cyclone to hit Queensland and NT. I hope you are not too effected by it, and hope all your family and friends survive OK.

Interesting article in todays Shields Gazette regarding men from Shields who had joined the Australian Army and fought at Gallipoli.
I wonder if any of Mr. Halls relative are still living in Australia

    # 2 There are some interesting figures in a recent edition of the NZ Genealogist about Gallipoli -- 8556 NZ soldiers fought there, by January 1916 3111 had returned to NZ as unfit for further service and 4857 were either sick or wounded. By my reckoning less than 600 were still there at the end of the campaign. There are no figures of soldiers killed in action. Interesting figures, Peter in NZ.

I think one of Carlyon's best comments in his book Gallipoli was, re Suvla:- 'Stopford, Hammersley, Braithwaite and Hamilton all metaphorically died here, caught loitering without intent'. These were the commanders of the operation.

Read somewhere don't think it was on here so maybe have been some readers letter in the newspaper that ref to the TV version of Gallipoli were scenes of a bren gun being used about a year before it ever appeared on the war scene and after Gallipoli. I have quite often seen things out of place and out date and period on TV, and yet you see in the credits all these advisors etc. that one on New Tricks where this Commander RN had his epaulette round the wrong way, hope they didn't pay their advisor on Naval Uniform any money. Believe but do not really know but think have read somewhere that the Turkish casualties were also quite significant. Seeing it through the screenplay on the TV shown in Australia at the moment shows the general consensus of opinion towards the Ruling Class of Army and Naval officers of the day. Whether this is true or not don't know as wasn't there the same as the rest of us, but if was they were a disgrace. They were the cause of most of the deaths not the enemy. Cannot imagine any Field Officer of the present day making such huge and obvious blunders, but there again one never knows. As my father and others said after the last war the British Army would of been unstoppable if lead by German Officers, probably because they had more of a tendency to lead from the front and not in the rear echelons in some HQ well guarded camp.
