Talking "Ee by gum, lad, look at that there Sharrabang !"

That's right Brian ,literally translated as a cart with bench seats(banc) I think. The term though was still used by our elders for a coach in Lancashire probably right up to the end of their lives. For instance it was spoken of like "Coom on ,luv,or we'll be missing t'sharrabang " ...

The picture I depicted was to me an enduring memory of the dorsal-finned coaches of the 50's ,as built by Harringtons of Hove,(they had it trade-marked )to sort of give the old-boxed shape a bit of flair for the glamour-starved post-war early 50's...how very daring !

Can't get enough pics of them now......here's another!

    Cool Wee Places

My first foreign port was Port de Bouc in
the south of France, and I think that it must
have been the smallest place I visited.

Perhaps a 'shooting brake' these days would be imagined by the younger generations to conjure up a vision of a high-powered BMW driven by two hoodies in south London, slamming the brakes on ,pointing a gun out of the window and committing a drive-by assassination.

I so desire to go 60 years back in time....
[/QUOTE] Of coiurse, beer was only a shilling a pint then.

Now Gulliver let us get this in perspective. They woul;d not be in a BMW, they would be in the first car they could steal, secondly they would certianly not breake for anything, not judging by the way I see such hoons driving.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

60 Years ago beer in Free Bolton was, 9d for a pint of Magees Mild , 10d for a Pint of Magees Bitter.-= 24 pints for a pound. If you sat in the best room on a Saturday night it was an extra penny for waiter service.
I was in the Millstone and bought my first car, a 1937 Morris 14,
A man shouts, "who wants to buy a car"? "I being bevied said `Me, how much?` `£10`says he.
I counted up. `I have only got £7`. `That will do` he says, here`s the log book and the keys, its in the car park,
    DTO 576.
When I had finished supping and ready to go , it was around 2 am, [ it was a sly grog in those days, and full of policemen all supping ale,], I staggered out side and climbed into my "new" car. I could`nt drive, never done it before, but I got it started and in bottom gear I wandered home three miles away. I got there eventually.
I had a lot of fun in that car, It was a magnet for the girls, no one had one in those days, plenty of action in the back seat.
I had one girl, a bit dim. I said `get in the back seat`, she said No, `Go on, get in the back seat`, No, `Why not` says I. she replied, `Cos I want to stay in the front with you`.Doh!.
I got bevied one night, it was my last night at home before shipping out on a Star boat to OZ, I dont remember going home, Dad said I came home in a taxi, I had to get an early train to Liverpool and forgot where I had parked the car, I came home five months later, and never saw the car again.
The early 50s were very good , especially as a Seaman, big pay off in the back pocket, all the mates were still apprentices and always broke, so I soon spent the pay off after being a millionaire for two weeks then back to sea again.
    Good Days.
    Cheers
    Brian.

That`s it Davey, some one has changed the Number plate.
What a classic, worth a fortune today, only cost me £7 . all those photos inside showed what a classic car it is, and that long back seat. lovely. Lots of memories there.
I have saved it to my computer . to show the Granchildren.
    Thanks,
    Brian.

Default Cardiff is the best place except for barry

Hi Shipmates ,The most wild and windswept place in winter must be the scottish isles but they are lovely in the summer, and the natives are friendly all year round.

Default So Lucky In My Life

I done 3 trips in the M.V Linguist Harrison's Lpool, Loved every one of them Caribbean, Mexican Gulf, Eastern ports USA and more. But one trip took in all the small islands that only millionaire's ever got to and i was paid for my troubles, ST Lucia/ ST Thomas/ ST Kits/ ST Vincent/ Granada/ Barbados/ Trinidad/ More than i can remember 4 months of heaven. Untouched by human hand in them days. I am sure i am not alone that you would walk around the deck and read the destination of some of the deck cargo and punch the air in joy. Happy day,s indeed Terry.
