Talking about salt being bad for you how about all you old shell backs
Sprayed with it over the years it must have got into the pores and body
system but still here to tell the story.
Maybe I am wrong.

Salt from sea spray is harmless but you must wash off as much as possible as soon as possible.

Salt that is ingested is very different and goes through a few processes before it reaches the supermarket shelf.
It is this salt that is bad for you.

Natural salt found in meat etc is OK.

I have had two blood tests , in June and again last week,
They say I am border line, Chronic Kidney Disease, CKD.
and Stop taking salt. but unfortunately salt is in almost everything including meat,
.Doctor said, if having a blood test , Do not eat any kind of meat for at least 12 hours before.

Good point Brian, all food now in any form of processed is either full of salt or sugar, and sometimes both.
The only way to avoid is by eating fruit and veg grown your own.
The purists wonder why society is getting so sick and over weight, salt and sugar is the problem.

When sailing the West African ports and also my 1st trip to sea on BP tanker there was always salt tablets on the tables!!...... Rgds Den

Den, While sailing up and down the West Coast of Africa on Palm boats we would take aboard Crewe boys in the port of Freetown it was an agreement Palm line had with the west coast for years, They would assist us lads on deck and some of them where very experienced deck hands indeed, They would live sleep and cook in the Focs,le Head I always remember being invited for supper with them, Pepper Soup it contained anything and everything they could muster main ingredient was fish and the head and eyes would be stirring at you, Take it from me it was an experience I enjoyed very much bit like a Vindaloo curry made up with just about anything Happy days Terry.

It was the same when I was on the TARKWA one of EDs in 1953.
the KROO BOYS are from the KROO Tribe of Freetown, Sierra Leone. Sounds like Crew.
The worked discharging cargo all the way down the coast and loading all the way back to Freetown again.
They had their own cooks in the focsle, good smells came out of there.
They had good names. such as .....
"Steam on Deck", and good sayings, He said to me ,.....
"Whats the matter for you, cant you want to or dont you or something.", figure that one out.

I used to go to Paddys Market in Liverpool, and get gear cjeap for them. `Steam on Deck` wanted an alarm clock, a big brass one, I took it back for him, He had it on a rope around his neck,

Brian when I was on Oguta Palm 1960s one of the crew ran a John Moors catalogue his credit must have been good because the van used to bring his large order down to the ship. He would then be flogging it all the way down the West coast. Rgds Den

Bri, Like myself you obviously remember them paying off in Freetown, As they collected there few shillings and descended down a rope ladder to go ashore they had some junk alright paint tins, Plastic tubs, Bits of old rope, ETC.. Obviously junk to us but they put everything to good use.
