CRS 10 Docket Content
I wonder if someone might help "decode" something in my Grandfather's Merchant Navy Service Record? The second entry in the record has a start date of 4 Nov 1944 Workington as his Date and Place of Engagement: I am OK with this. However, it is the entry before that I do not understand. It reads:
Name and ON of ship: that is OK
Date and place of engagement: EWO (help!)
Rank or rating: BLANK
F or H: BLANK (I know this to be Home of Foreign)
Date and Place of Discharge: Serving (help!)
He had WW2 medals.
Any ideas gratefully received, thanks

A site truly worthy of the British Merchant Navy!

EWO Emergency War Order
Merchant seamen serving during the Second World War were eligible for the following campaign medals:
1939 1939-1945 Star
AT Atlantic Star
Could it be that the Date and place of discharge are not shown due to loss of life at Sea! Thus still Serving!
Another one for Hugh!!

Hello Bertie and welcome,
The fact that some parts of the CRS 10 are not complete means nothing other than the clerk ashore probably couldn't be bothered filling it in or didn't know. It would be good to see the document to get a better idea.
Castleman, I think you unintentionally missed out some medals that could be awarded to the Merchant Navy.
They could be awarded up to eight medals:
1939-1945 Star, Atlantic Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Burma Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star and War Medal depending on which theatres of the war they served.
Regards
Hugh

Thanks
Thanks Hugh
Just to add a little here is a list with abbreviations used in case anyone wants to know in the future
The following codes may be found on the record:
1939 (1939-1945 Star)
AT (Atlantic Star)
AF (Africa Star)
PA (Pacific Star)
BU (Burma Star)
FR (France & Germany Star)
WM (War Medal)
IT (Italy Star)
CL (Clasp)
OLE (Oak Leaf Emblem)
In general a cross through a code indicates that the medal was issued; a circle over a code indicates that only the ribbon for that medal has been issued; a cross and a circle indicate that both a medal and a ribbon have been issued. The letter "R" over a code can signify that an application for that medal was reviewed and refused
No one person could receive more than five stars and the two WWII medals. Also no one person was awarded more than one clasp to any one campaign star.
Cheers
