I have trawled through the gallery looking for pictures of this old Blue Flue ship. She was reputed to have had the longest funnel at sea in the 50's. We often passed her on the Aussie run, and it was true that you saw the funnel on the horizon before anything else. Any photos or history ?

    Default Nestor....... and Nestor

Hi Bruno, As you can probably imagine, there were 5 Blue Flue NESTOR’s in all. Obviously within ‘our era’ we must mean Numbers 3 and 4:-so I’ve sorted out facts and pics for you.
I must say that all Blue Flue ships seemed to me to have tall chimneys!-Especially the early ones:,-kept the soot out of the passenger’s eyes,I suppose….and gave the deck crew some painting to do on the long voyage(Heh,heh!

Thank you all for your rapid response to my query. I thought it might prompt a reaction but not that much.
The one that I recognize in the selection is no.7. Although it is a painting rather than a photo, that is how I remember her. As there is no bibliography attached I may be wrong. Perhaps one of you students of seafaring is going to tell me that she was torpedoed during ww2.
    Cheers

    Hello Pete,
The TSS NESTOR that you refer to with the longest funnel is the 1913 built vessel.

Alright Gulliver, keep yer wool on. I was only going on memories of almost 60 years ago, not provoking an argument. I think we may be talking at cross purposes anyway because it is obvious that the numbers in the photo album do not relate to the chronology. Having said that you and Hugh's insistence that it was No.3,
does not add up with me. That particular Nestor was scrapped in 1950, I wasn't even deep sea at that time. I am convinced that the Nestor I remember was BF's No.4 which was built in 1952. No.3 may have had the longest funnel in the company's history, but it was gone at the time I am on about. I was not aware when I raised the question that Blue Funnel had a very comprehensive website. So thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
    Cheers
    Pete

    Hello Pete,
Certainly, TSS NESTOR of 1913 had the longest BF funnel - thought that was your question. Sorry can't add anymore detail to your request.

    Hi Pete,

I used to work for Blue Funnel and the N boats of the fifties were high performance steam ships which required high funnels to facilitate the boiler draught. The Nestor was such an N boat and she had a high funnel. They were on the Oz run most of the time.
It was normal on deck to see the funnel of a Blue Flue job first. Good turn of speed these ships had.
    Specialist engineers on them.

    regards
    jimmy
