Truck Smash and long delays

Got caught up in this Today on my way to Katoomba Shops. Took nearly an Kour to get from Blackheath to Katoomba,and on return trip some 5 Hrs later again took even longer 2 hrs 15mim from Katoomba to Blackheath.
Terrible when there is a Large Truck smash on this Great Western Highway,its far too narrow at points for the amount of Traffic it carries. But that's life. Luckily the Driver was not seriously injured! Boy what a mess!

Vernon, first the good news, you are OK.
Secondly the bad news, some pets will be going hungry this weekend.

But it is almost a daily occurrence on our roads somewhere across the nation.
We hear of them daily here in Melbourne, somewhere a major hold up caused by some traffic trauma.
Not sure why, maybe too many idiots who do not allow enough time to get where they are going, speed and before you know it cause a major upset.

The majority of our major roads are fine, sadly the same cannot be said of so many drivers, or should that be aimers?

They have just completed between J23A and J25 of the M1 making it into a smart motorway.
The motorway has no hard shoulder, the shoulder is now used as an additional lane at peak times, safe refuges are placed at approximately 1.25 miles apart. God help you if you breakdown in between.
Additional signage has been installed, more CCTV cameras than a normal motorway.
Biggest gripe, and which I share, in an accident on a conventional motorway, rescue services could travel on the hard shoulder unimpeded, if using the hard shoulder as an additional lane how do the rescue services get to the accident.
As I said earlier, more gantries with additional signs have been installed on the smart motorway sections, with signs warning of accidents ahead and information on what speeds the motorist should be doing.
What is not advertised is that, once the gantry signs indicate a speed lower than the maximum permitted on a motorway, the speed cameras are automatically activated. So if the signs say 50mph do 50 or risk ticket and points.
