POrt and Starboard
In yesterdays paper was an amazing story about two Orcas called Port and Starboard, which have been patrolling off the South African coast' killing Great white sharks. They are now getting well known for displaying what they achieve. They don't kill the sharks, they cut out their livers, and in some cases where there are small boats full of sightseers they breach and display the livers to the people on board.
Jeez we could do with their help off our beaches.
Great pictures in the paper but unfortunately I don't have a printer.

Re: POrt and Starboard
Remember once off the Kiwi coast catching a shark by just towing the bait on a heaving line Des. It wasn’t particularly large so don’t remember the species, Anyhow it started giving birth whilst lying on the deck and one of the ABs just flung over the side. They then cut the heart out of the shark and threw its body overboard as well , that heart was on display on number 5 hatch still pumping away for over an hour. I was still young enough to have feelings of a cruel act being carried out. Today I would do away with any shark I had the misfortune to meet.,they maybe a protected species today but so is the human being., JS

Hi John
I have posted this before, once had a near thing with the biggest hammerhead shark I had ever see, went to dive in the water off the wharf in New Plymouth, when this massive hammerhead slid out from under the wharf, you could smell me a mile away.

Re: POrt and Starboard
We hooked one just close to the Red Sea, not large but we had some very tasty shark steaks to eat.
Not a special i would recommend but different all the same.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: POrt and Starboard
Would have maybe sounded more nautical if the two orcas had been christened Starboard and Larboard, however that may have brought up the discussion on the misfortunes of the Titanic and the poor innocent iceberg. JS

#3 well said Des , as I said in a previous post when returning to Aberdeen and our present king was still in the Prince area , his remark when looking at the vessel was I hope you were wearing your brown trousers out there ? Funny how everyone assumes that the bowels cannot be trusted in precaurious situations, I sincerely hope that his present ill health improves as he finds himself in such a position . Good health is the first thing people have to have to have a happy life. God save the King is said with all honesty and hope his present short stay in hospital was beneficial . JS

Re: POrt and Starboard
To put Port and Starboard into perspective.
Port comes out of a bottle and is drunk after dinner.
Starboard is a movie star or similar on a passenger ship.

Re: POrt and Starboard
My brief time with passengers only about 11 months , was when one . old dear asked me how I remembered port from starboard. I said just think of port wine, there are 4 letters in port and also in left and it is red. And for starboard just think of Crème de Menthe which is green and opposite to port. I knew she liked her tipple as on coming on board in Montreal all the 12 passengers were met by myself, the Ch. Stwd. And the two stewardesses. The ladies were presented with a bunch of flowers and the men with a flight bay with Saguenay Terminals on its side. As ch. off. I then took them up to the passenger bar on the monkey island showed them the bar which I had the keys for. Showed them the price list and said I don’t mind if I do thank you. Then later got the stewardesses to show them their cabins . This was 1967 and it was a $100 a day and it was a 6 week round trip. If they were in a double berth by choice as wanted their privacy it cost them
$200 a day. Think it is cheaper today by all accounts. JS
PS the $ was the US $

Re: POrt and Starboard
Cost of a cruise now depends on so many factors.
Inboard cabin, ocean view, balcony, mini suite or full suite.
Dinks package included or not.
It can vary between about $450 to $1050 per day.
Bit different to all those years ago.
