John,would that have been Captain J.Y.Lee? If so,youre right,he was a great Skipper. Nice to know some of us from the Singapore Pool are still surviving.

Yep, I also did one trip on Shell Tankers on the HYALINA in 1953. If I remember rightly it was Rotterdam-Aruba two or three times before paying . off . Nice modern ship I recall, food too was OK but boring run so back to cargo ships & more time in ports. Guess nowadays most ships could be described like that but theres TV ,telephones and computors,crew bars and better wages to alleviate the boring bit.

Was on the Hemiglypta and got time off in Newcastle NSW and got the train down to Sydney for 3 days, man for a young Limey, that train ride was impressive.This would have been in the month of may 61.

had a great 3 days with a friend, then got back on the Hemi for trip back to UK. We were one of the first Non Dutch Shell ships into Pula Bukam, no shore leave allowed, as things still dangerous.

Before I get to old and out of kilter, going to come and visit Aussie from Vancouver, where we have now lived for 40 years.

You were fairly lucky Charlie, scroll forward a few more years and the three of same class (Velutina, Velletia and Verena) were all nightmares. They were all three boiler jobs and DC electrics.
I visited a friend of mine while Velutina was in drydock at Brighams in South Shields in 68. She had taken 10 days to sail from Norway due to repeated breakdowns.
She was in dock for about 2 weeks, during which time the boilers were re- tubed.
Got as far as the piers on way out and --- was towed back in. There were other nightmare stories around the fleet about the others also

Tony I don't recall any happenings out of the ordinary when I was on her. only did the one trip 6 weeks. Don't recall the date signed on & off my second discharge book was left on the Imperial Star.
