My one trip with Joe Shell

1966 12 month on the Hindsia (first trip EDH) Flew home from Singapore.
Thing I most remember was the Esso Norfolk (an old T2) taking the bow of us in Pula Bukam roads.

Good memories.
I was in the "Naticina" for all of 1956 and the 1st qtr of 57.
We were transferred to the Singapore base as the Suez canal was closed.

I enjoyed the China Sea, the Phillipines, Indonesia, etc.

At least I enjoy the memories but I felt trapped then!

I'd do it again, now, like a shot!

Pulau Bukam, Pula Sambu (sorry about the spelling) still looked the same a couple or three years ago when I did a stop over in Singapore on the way back from Oz. Still big queues of ships waint to get unloaded/loaded.
Those were the days!

hi all . sailed 11 trips on old joe shell. 1 out and 1 back. on the asprella,carrying chemicals.from porto rico to europe. the ship was good but i didnt like the chemicals, constant washing down and tank cleaning, yuk, i always prefered cargo ships. we used to get life boat drill every week.i dont know why,if we'd have gone up we'd have had to have wings on the lifeboats. which nearly happend in rotterdam!. some stupid idiot, came on deck with a lit smoke in his hand.he was on a barge not far from our berth. whoosh went the barge,we were let go and going down the river in milli seconds.sirens and alarms going flat out, and we had no pilot aboard.scary stuff. then the bosun asked if we would like to come back next trip. you can imagine my reply @#$$^$^***. best wishes geoff.

Paulo Bukum,Paulo Sambo,Pladju,Miri.Surabaya,Balik Papan,blimey you've kicked off some memories. Did a year 1953/54 in Narica. The mailing address is burned into my brain,PO Box 148,Singapore.They were pretty rough ships,we had some fun though,narrowly escaping jail more than once.(Month in dry dock in Hong Kong.Say no more) We still had a Merchant Navy in those days. A ship flying the Red Duster usually had a British crew,with certain exceptions,unlike nowadays. We saw the best years thats for sure.

Hi Ajay.
I also did the one trip on a Shell tanker,the Latirus,she was deep sea going,but when we joined
her in Swansea,for some reason she was only "coasting">Left Swansea,cruised around for a few
days,then docked at Earlam in Liverpool,where we immediatly paid off with just enough cash for a
train ticket home.

Hi All
Sailed on the Anadara 64 joined her in Cardiff dry dock sailed for Aruba or Curacao just before Christmas down to BA back to Carribean across to Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg and home to Ellesmere Port and paid off. Very good ship, good crew, food very good and accomadation excellent for time.

G'day Hawkeye not many flying the Red Duster these days, cheaper to register in the Bahamas and other such places.
