Hi Les.
Just got my NRMA Mag, they reckon at the rate that electric cars are being produced and sold it is in the foreseeable future that petrol and diesel driven cars will be obsolete,which if it is right the Arabs can go back to living in tents. But we will still have a problem; what are we going to be using for electricity?

It was with interest many years ago that the Institute of electrical engineers stated that the United Kingdom would need 5 nuclear power stations to carry us through the next 30 or 40 years obviously at the rate that wind farms have gone up this may now be a lesser urgency but has Hitachi have dropped out as constructors it looks like the nuclear power program is slowly sliding into the bin

When it comes to electric cars the one question that I've never got a reasonable answer out of his what do you do with the batteries where does the world supply of lithium come from when you start looking at things like that it really does leave some questions open as 2 is electric propulsion the best way

In the urgency to get rid of coal as a fuel we rushed headlong into every other way but I'm sure that it's not beyond the capabilities of man to find some way of cleaning up the exhaust we just seem do follow whichever crowd makes the loudest noises

Few points of interest here.

If electric is to replace diesel and petrol why have we had six very large new servos built , in the last two years, within a 15 kilometer radius of where we live? Not one has an electric recharge point.
Current estimations say there is enough ready available crude to last about 52 years, with as much again in harder to reach regions.
Yes Rob the supply of Lithium will not last forever.
We heard here the other week from a UK correspondent that 5 Nuclear power stations will be needed and will be built.
But as to the batteries, the power and copper required to make them, and then the decomishining of them when their shelf live is done!

UN announced today that last year was the fourth hottest on record since global records began in 1948!!

As Les puts it so correctly, ALL politicians have one concern, their personal continuation at the trough.

Well for all the talk by politicians here both major parties are supporting the massive Andani mine in Queensland as it will give jobs to a few people. For those who maybe haven't heard, the floods in Queensland sent them from Five years of drought into a swampland, with over 300,000 head of cattle dead and uncountable sheep numbers. Maybe they will listen to the Aboriginals who have told them for over a hundred years that the white mans way will not work in the bush country. Would you believe that they have massive cotton fields in N.S.W. which takes massive amounts of water, the last two weeks has seen Millions of fish dead as the river system packs up from cotton farmers draining it.

Same happened in Russia, they killed off the Aral Sea in order to grow cotton.
