Default The Scots gave GEORDIES their name.

In 1644 during the Civil War, Royalist Newcastle was beseiged for three months and fell to the Earl of Leven's Scottish army. It was for this defence that Newcastle was said to have been granted its motto "FORTITER DEFENDIT TRIUMPHANS" from King Charles 1st.

The name "GEORDIE"S was born during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion when the Jacobites bypassed Newcastle, which, as well as favouring the Hanoverian King George, was also a well guarded garrison. The Jacobites kept well clear and said that Newcastle and the surrounding areas were all "for George" hence the name GEORDIES was born.

The origin of the word Geordie has been a matter of much discussion and controversy. All the explanations are fanciful and not a single piece of genuine evidence has ever been produced.

    I do like:

As the season at which cockles are in greatest demand is generally the most stormy in the year – September to March – the sailors' wives at the seaport towns of Northumberland and Durham consider the cry of the cockle man as the harbinger of bad weather, and the sailor, when he hears the cry of 'cockles alive,' in a dark wintry night, concludes that a storm is at hand, and breathes a prayer, backwards, for the soul of Bad-Weather-Geordy.

—S. Oliver, Rambles in Northumberland, 1835

Missed out Cappy"s real name is McCappy, but sounded too much like a well known coffee that he shortened. He always wears the kilt of the McCappy clan with the dirk, (not Dick) down his right sock when coming north of the River. Cheers Apples and Pears and Ginger Beers. JS

    GEORDIE NECTAR
Horror of horrors, Heineken {spit, spit}, the brewers of Newcastle Brown Ale are removing the ingredient that gives it its dark colouring.
Life will never be the same again.

    To Cappy,
Your bold answer to Lou's question in number 4 confirms the Jacobites were correct in deciding to stay clear of Newcastle and its surrounding areas. This must have enabled them to escape the stench caused by (using your description) e.g. King Geordie's government troops and the Geordie Hanoverian supporters billeted in the garrison. Owing to the answer you gave Lou, my Stewart ancestors would have only been too glad to offer you a position in the Jacobite army.

    FOURO.

Is there such a place as Eden
    Lovely and serene
Oh yes there is my bonny lad
    Valley of emerald green
    Eden of my father
    Newcastle upon the Tyne
    Eden of my childhood
    Wondrous and sublime
Could there be a spot of heaven
    Abandoned by the Gods
    Sitting here on earth
    To survive against the odds
    Look around my bonny lad
    Each treasure will be thine
    Such it is your heritage
