Bagging off
I can only think of Bagging-off as a form of a take-out meal. In the darkest recess of my mind and the years at sea 1953 to 1958 I have the suspicions it has other meanings. Any help for my tired 82 year old mind?
Thanking you in advance, Rodney

Re: Bagging off
Couple for you Rodney
(A)
Loading bulk grain on a 5 hatch ship, 4 holds would be full right into the hatch coamings which act as feeders, the 5th hold would not be full and the surface of the grain well below the level of the hatch coaming, this required bagging off the total surface of the loose grain by layers of bags, normally about 15 bags deep to prevent a free surface effect of the grain acting like a slack ballast tank and causing the vessel to list and put it in a dangerous stabily situation.
(B)
When you went into a bar in Valparaiso (other ports are available) and picked her (a lady of the night) up after a lovely evening of dancing, then took her to an abode for a little of 'the other' it was known as 'Bagging off' which was an unfair description for those young luscious ladies because it originated by young men going out with very mature ladies known as bags.

Re: Bagging off
Hi Tony ,
I can't ever remember eating fish and chips whilst bagging off, I do remember eating them while loading wheat in Queensland.

Re: Bagging off
Which reminds me of Japan in those days, and the ladies of the night in the clubs, and if you were seen to be talking to another one ,than the one you had been with, you referred to as a *butterfly*, and not approved of, so those ladies had their own code. Japan in the 60s was a lovely run ashore, kt
