Hi shipmates
I did three trips on the Stirling Castle, fromOct 1958 - March 1959. Does anyone remember we lost a crew member overboard on the S African coast?, i believe between Capetown and East London. Cheers Keith (aka Gypcoll)

I knew it had to happen! Great!

I too was on the Sterling at the same time as you Keith,and yes i recall that incident,it was as you say between Cape Town and East London,if memory is correct the Guy jumped off the rear of the Ship ,and we circled for quite a few hours trying to locate this poor chap,but without success!
I cant recall the Capt's name (possibly Hockly or similar to that) but he really tried all he could to find this person,before eventually going onwards to East London! (or was it the other way on the homeward trip?) Memory!!
What capacity were you? (OK i found you as Deck Boy) I was in First Class Lounge for one trip,then Tourist Class for 2 Trips!
My Time on her was from Aug 1958 to Jan 1959,so we were on at almost the same times except for the one Voyage before and one after!
Yours being from Oct 1958 - March 1959.
You must remember these Girls haha!

You were listed as a Young Person (under age 18)on a Document i have KW Tindell from(Wickham) Hants! An address in Brom;ey is listed this could have been your Parents ?1st Ship 17th Dec 1958 ?? However the NA has you as Tindell !!
Yours being from Oct 1958 - March 1959. Did you perhaps sign on Earlier and not Ship out untill Dec of 1958??

Hi Vernon,
Thanks for your reply, re Stirling Castle, that was me on the register, this site has mis spelt my name, the correct spelling is Tindell, although i get called many different things!!!!!. I remember the guy overboard well. not in person, but job at emergency station was on the painter of the motor boat, ready to let them go. I also recall bringing back gold bullion, loaded directly from the train dockside. good memories, regards Keith

#4 By old Good Hope Castle did you mean the ex Empire boat? My Father was Bosun on her.

Empire Life, I took the Good Hope Castle to the breakers in Hong Kong June 1960. after doing three trips on her. good job on deck, The Bosun Broke his leg that last trip trapped it in the sheaves of the Jumbo when we were rigging it in Mauritious. The Captain said it was only sprained and we had to walk him around the poop every day to exercise it. then it went worse and we paid him off in Singapore.
I have a photo somewhere of him if it is your Dad that trip.

I too joined the Stirling on 19-Oct-60. My main memory is keeping an eye on the watertight doors working waist deep in water with a heavy swell saving the booze and stores down below after she hit rocks off Dakar. Capt Cambridge had been showing passengers the most westerly tip of Africa. I have been told if the gash had been a few more feet she would have sunk.
