Is this a one-off post?
Is this a one-off post, I do not know. I have come here to ask a question on behalf of my father, who was a merchant seaman in ww2. I will ask that on another forum here. I have not myself had any interest in ships before this date, but I do have an interest in boats as well as all the other vehicles with which one can be mobile. The only ship I have been on is the HMS Belfast which my father took me to see when I was a boy. I am now in my forties. Of all things ships I think I would be most interested in the communications, both in the time of ww2 and modern ones. I do have an interest in submarines and submersibles. I have forgotten what the words are that he used, it might have been a floating dock that he was stationed on for much of the time, but he was also on board a ship, serving as a seaman and as a cook.

What's the question, David? I was a radio officer from 1943 until 1951 and am the author of LIFE ABOARD A WARTIME LIBERTY SHIP published by Amberley Publishing.

Re Is this a one-off post?
Thanks for the replies and for the welcome, I have become interested enough in this visit to stay around. While not being knowledgeable about ships, I might be able to make generalised replies to peoples' posts.
Someone on another forum said once that he doesn't know how ships float, so I replied that it is because they are hollow. While this seemed to me to be a knowledgeable answer at the time I have wondered since if it was the right thing. Even if hollow it appears to me that their weight would sink them.

It is all to do with displacement of water. The shape of a ship is also a contributing factor, but I am sure there will be some better informed than I on this site who can fully explain it.

Happy daze John in Oz.
