Grandfather with Hogarth's Baron ships
My name is Colin Brown; I live in Edinburgh. My grandfather, whom I never knew, was Eric Alexander Brown, born 1891. He trained from age 14 on sailing ships and was wrecked twice off South America - on Deccan in 1909 and Swanhilda in 1910. He joined the Army in the 14-18 conflict, and then after the war joined Hogarths, as Master on many different Baron boats. He was torpedoed twice in the 39-45 conflict, once whilst Master of Western Chief by the Italians, and in March 45 on Baron Jedburgh by U-532 in mid-Atlantic. He died after illness on board Baron Murray in 1953. Any memories or tales from anyone who might have known him would be most welcome!

Re: Grandfather with Hogarth's Baron ships
Colin, I sailed with a man who may have known him or maybe not. He would have been with Hogarths in the latter end of the fourties as an apprentice I would imagine. I was mate with him in the late 60"s. His name was Peter Turnbull from Glasgow. He was master in Hogarths in the latter part of the 60"s before they went to Lyles I believe. However there is every chance he is no longer with us as must be getting on by now. Unless he has any family who follow this site, it may be a hard job to find anyone of that era now, however keep trying you never know who might pop up. Regards John Sabourn
